| My name is Dr.Syed Nayyar Raza Kazmi. I am a Public Health
Physician by profession and currently working as Chief Medical
Coordinator for the Community Pediatrics Project, Khyber Teaching
Hospital, Peshawar. It is Project of the Health Department of the
Government of NWFP, Pakistan which according to the Govt. of
Pakistan policy intends to improve the general Health Status of
children under 5 years of age. Since Pakistan ranks 157th in the
world according to the status of Child Health therefore the Govt.
is actively engaged in improving the health status of children
through various programmes and projects. My work includes
coordinating the field activities between various Health related
Departments and vertical and horizontal health programmes. My work
also includes supervision and monitoring of various Primary Health
Care Activities, imparting Community Pediatrics and MCH training to
Primary health Physicians and paramedical staff as well as active
research, surveillance and writing analytical reports for Unicef
and W.H.O.
Well about my education....I did my M.B.,B.S ( Bachelors in
Medicine and Surgery from Khyber Medical College, University of
Peshawar, Pakistan in 1996. After completing my internship in
Ophthalmology and Diagnostic Radiology, I joined the ICRC
(International Committee for Red Cross ) as Supervising Field
Medical Officer and that is where my interest in field of Public
Health and Epidimiology developed. As SFMO, ICRC, I came across
the pathetic health conditions of Afghan refugees and our rural
population. I saw many medical conditions which were of endemic
and epidemic proportions. The irony was that majority of the cases
were preventable by simple cost-effective measures specially
Health Education. There I realized that Clinical Medicine has
failed to improve the health conditions of the masses. In the
meantime I joined the University of Peshawar, Post Graduate
Diploma in Public Health Program and topped it with a Gold Medal
:-)
During this time I had also cleared F.C.P.S part-one exam in
Community Medicine. During this time I was also engaged in
teaching undergraduates of Gandhara Institute of Medical Sciences
and was teaching them Public Health. I was also engaged in reseach
at this time and completed my controversial study on Analysis of
causes of Failure of Primary Health Care in NWFP, Pakistan.
I have the honour that this study was published by the Oxford
Journal of Public Health. No.IX, Vol.XXII, pp.134-142.1999.
In 1999 I took admission in M.Sc Community Health and Nutrition
Progamme of Allam Iqbal Open University, Islamabad and at the same
time was given permanent commission in the provincial Health
Department as a General Duty Medical Officer and as first
assignment was deputed to the Community Pediatrics Project, KTH,
Peshawar as Chief Medical Officer and was given the challenging
role of improving the Primary Health Care Services in Pabbi area,
both technically as well as administratively. in 2001 I completed
my M.Sc and also completed PostGraduate Diploma in Information
Technology( with speciality in Advanced Computer Programming).
Currently I am also working as
part time Consultant with Unicef, and also delivering lectures as
part time visiting lecturer to students of Post-Graduate Diploma
in Public Health at Peshawar University.
